Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month on Clapper

May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the US! This month is a wonderful way to honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of AAPI communities and creators. To celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, we’ve launched a brand new hashtag and created a whole new set of gifts. Plus, we’ll be spotlighting a local (to us!) event we attended last year to celebrate Filipino culture.

#AAPI

This year, we want to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage all month long! We’ll be releasing three limited-edition gifts to highlight AAPI Heritage Month and celebrate our AAPI creators.

You can also get involved by sharing your stories and experiences! Use the hashtag #AAPI to

  • Share your favorite traditional dishes or the history of your favorite dish.
  • Show traditional clothing and explain the significance behind them.
  • Visit (maybe virtually) historical landmarks and explain their importance.
  • Review books, TV shows, and movies created by AAPI artists, and celebrate AAPI culture.
  • Demonstrate traditional arts and crafts from various AAPI cultures.

And more! All our users can join us in celebrating and amplifying this vibrant community.

Lone Star Palengke

Last year, the Clapper team attended the Lone Star Palengke. The Panlengke is a celebration of Filipino culture hosted in Plano, TX. Local vendors and artists set up booths to show off their products, and food vendors serve up exciting Filipino dishes. There’s also a free concert featuring a Filipino artist – last year’s was JONAVI. The Lone Star Palengke is an exciting way for North Texas to celebrate Filipino culture and heritage, and we were so glad to be part of it.

The Clapper team came out in full force last year! We hosted a karaoke booth, and attendees could drop by to belt their favorite song. Of course, we answered any questions they had about Clapper, but we were far more interested in hearing their songs and stories.

AAPI Heritage Month History

The effort to officially recognize the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders began in the 1970s. In 1977, two different representatives introduced resolutions to recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage, though neither of them passed. But the next year, in 1978, a resolution asking the president to proclaim a week during the first ten days of May Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week did pass. In 1990 congress expanded the observance from a week to a month and in 1992, May was annually designated as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month under George H.W. Bush. You can learn more about the history of this holiday here.

Use the hashtag #AAPI to get involved and learn more about AAPI heritage and culture this month.
