Why It’s Important

The Walz-Vance debate is set to be the last before the election this November. This comes on the heels of the presidential debate in September, where Trump and Harris went head-to-head for the first time. The debate also gives undecided or uncommitted voters a chance to evaluate both candidates. VPs shape future policies and leadership, and other performances can provide insight into their party’s vision and stability.

What To Expect

The debate will last around 90 minutes, and the candidates’ mics will not be muted. Candidates will not bring notes or props on stage and cannot speak with campaign staff during breaks. Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan will moderate the debate. Each candidate will have two minutes to answer questions and two minutes to respond. Unlike the previous debate, there will be no fact-checker.

Here are some topics to look out for.

  • Scrutiny over Vance’s past controversial remarks, such as his”childless cat ladies” comment and false claims about Haitian immigrants.
  • Walz will likely be questioned about the 2020 Minneapolis riots and a COVID-era food assistance fraud.
  • Both candidates’ military records could come up, as well as Vance’s Senate term and Walz’s gubernatorial term.
  • Hot topics for both parties include the economy, national security, abortion, and social justice.
