Your 4th of July 2025 Watchlist 🍿

  • Hamilton – If you haven’t watched Hamilton yet…where have you been? This rap musical (yes, you read that right) follows the life of Alexander Hamilton, the $10 founding father. The entire first act follows Hamilton’s journey from immigrant landing in New York to George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolution.
  • Indepdence Day – Independence Day is a 4th of July classic, for obvious reasons. If you haven’t seen it yet, we’ll give you the tea. Aliens invade on July 3rd, destroying major cities across the world. The survivors band together to fight back. Is it historical? No, but it’s still iconic.
  • Turn: Washington’s Spies – As the name suggests, Turn is about Washington’s most successful spy ring during the American Revolution. The series centers around Abraham Woodhull, a humble cabbage farmer turned spy. But the show follows other notable figures, like George Washington (duh), Major John André, General Benedict Arnold, and John Graves Simcoe (who’s especially important considering Canada Day was July 1st).
  • Killers of the Flower Moon – It’s 1919. Oil has been discovered on Osage Nation Land in Oklahoma, then the Osage people start being murdered one by one. In addition to shedding light on a dark time in American history, the Osage Nation was heavily involved in the movie’s production. And lead actor, Lily Gladstone, became the Indigenous (Native American) person to win an acting Golden Globe.
  • The Six Triple Eight – Released at the tail end of 2024, this Netflix movie is inspired by the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII. Their mission? Fight three-year backlog of undelivered mail. We won’t spoil this inspiring movie for you, but we’ll recommend having a few tissues nearby.

4th of July Fun Facts 🦅

Gather up your favorite fun facts and share them in a fun video. Bonus points if they’re related to your niche (food and cooking fun facts might be particularly interesting) or just general tidbits.

Lucky for you, we’ve got a few in our back pocket! Here are five fun facts to get you started.

  • Independence day is technically July 2nd! The Continnental Congress voted on independence from Britain, which passed in a near-unanimous vote. But, because the official Declaration of Independence wasn’t adopted until July 4th, that day became the official celebration. Much to John Adam’s chargrin.
  • The first valentine sent in North America was sent during the American Revolution. It was actually sent from a British officer to a young woman that might have been an American spy! And, from the tone of the letter, it sounds like the officer knew it.
  • Not only was Washington fighting the British, but he was fighting a small pox epidemic that lasted from 1775-1782. This teeny but powerful enemy was eventually defeated with quarantine and inoculation – a routine we’re now very familiar with.
  • In 1782, 22 year old Deborah Sampson disguised herself as a man to serve in the Revolutionary Army. She would go on to serve for 2 years, leading raids, scouting neutral territory, and fighting in battles before beign discovered. She was honorably discharged, paid a pension, and her husband was awarded pay as the spouse of a soldier. Talk about girl power!
  • Benjamin Franklin didn’t want to bald eagle to be America’s national bird. In a letter to his daughter, he said the bird was lazy and of bad moral character. Which is a crazy thing for Franklin to say considering how he treated his wife.
