We just released our new in-app editor, an easy-to-use feature that combines five editing essentials into one powerful tool. But no matter how easy someone makes it, new tools and processes can be hard to understand. Add to that the complexities and general overwhelm of editing, and of course, this new feature is a little confusing.
But don’t worry; we’re sharing our expertise with you. Over the past few weeks, we took deep dives into our new editing tools, from crop to voiceover and literally everything in between. We told you how to use a feature, why you should, and even gave you examples of fun ways to work it into your content.
We’re wrapping up this series by discussing the last editing tool in your arsenal. The cherry on top of your videos: voiceover.
What is a Voiceover? 🎙️
We’ll keep this brief, because you’re familiar with what a voiceover is. Even if you’ve never edited a video, you’ve heard a voiceover…several times. Because it’s a staple of video editing, on and off social media.
A voiceover, also called narration, is when the creator adds an audio of them speaking over the video. And it’s probably the easiest editing tool ever.
How to Add a Voiceover 🗣️
Voiceover is one of our OG editing features. We’ve just optimized it for you!
- Open the Clapper app and tap the button in the middle of the menu along the bottom.
- Select “video”; either record up to 10 minutes of video in the app, or upload your clips.
- Finished recording? Tap the orange “Next” button in the right corner.
- Tap the “Voiceover” button on the right side of the screen.
- Scroll through until you find where you want your voiceover to start.
- Tap the record button and start talking!
- To erase a voiceover, hit the back arrow.
- To edit sections, click “Done,” tap the voiceover bar, and edit it like a clip.
- Finish your edits and double-check the sound level.
- Add a description, hashtags, and some final touches, then post.
If you can press a button and yap, you can record a voiceover.
Why You’d Record a Voiceover 🤔
Voiceovers fit with just about every niche and type of content. You can do anything with them! But there are a few ways we see voiceover used more often than others
Tutorials 🤓
The most popular (and expected) way to use a voiceover is through a tutorial. Clearly explain what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and walk viewers through how they can replicate it. You can even share extra tips that might not come across in the content itself!
Check out this cooking video, for example.
Comedy 🤣
You can use a voiceover to make a video funny. That might be adding some imaginary dialogue to a scene or injecting some funny ad libs on your video. We recommend keeping the comedy related to your content…at least a little.

…Just Yapping 💬
A very popular use of voiceovers is for storytimes or just to talk to your viewers. Whatever you’re yapping about might be related to the video…or it might not! You could tell the story of the worst date you’ve ever been on while you clean your house.
Check out this cake decorating video as an example!
Voiceovers add personality and clarity to your videos. They let your audience into your head and make a video feel like a more personal connection.
And with that, you’re a video editing expert! You can edit on Clapper without breaking a sweat. Even if you don’t want to make perfectly polished videos, these tools will help you create content that’s eye-catching, engaging, and still authentic.
