Will Chat GPT Images Ruin Social Media?

OpenAI recently launched Chat GPT images. According to their website, this image generator will unlock “useful and valuable image generation with a natively multimodal model capable of precise, accurate, photorealistic outputs.”

Basically, this new version of Chat GPT can create hyper-realistic images in a variety of styles. Illustrations, graphics, photographs, the list goes on. A recent trend even showcases Chat GPT’s skill at recreating Studio Ghibli’s iconic style. And while this is an incredible tool, it raises some concerns for content creators and everyday people.

In this article, we’ll cover what this new tool is, why you should keep an eye on it, and how you can use it for your content creation.

What Is It? 🤖

Chat GPT Images is a free image generator created by OpenAI as part of Chat GPT 4o. Now, instead of just being a text-based AI, Chat GPT can generate high-quality images and videos. With a simple prompt, like “Generate an image of a black cat recording a vlog of her daily routine during Halloween”, you can have a high-quality image in less than a few minutes.

How Creators Can Use It 📸

There are quite a few ways creators of all kinds can use Chat GPT images. AI in general is a great tool for content creators, but AI images opens a new door.

Graphics Are Easier ✅

If you need a static design, like a poster, a logo, or even a fun graphic, Chat GPT images can generate it easily. Give it some prompts, include any text you want on it, tell it what you like and don’t like, and you have a fun, fairly unique graphic in about five minutes.

Hyper-Specific Images ✅

No more hoping you can find a stock image of what you’re talking about. AI image generators can create exactly what you need. Need a picture of an old, probably haunted house that looks like a witch owns it for a story? AI’s got you.

Creative Inspiration ✅

We’ve all seen pictures online and thought, “I could make that”. AI images can give you a specific boost! Ask it to generate a cake for you to recreate, or a picture you’ll draw in your own style. Instead of having Chat GPT images generate the final product, have it give you a prompt!

What’s the Problem? 😡

Tech gurus, AI-lovers, and entrepreneurs will try to sell you on the benefits of AI. But they’ll conveniently leave out some extra details. You can’t always control them, but using AI is a bit like driving a car; you should know about the periphery when you get in the driver’s seat.

Deep Fakes ❌

The main concern people have with AI is that, while it’s not great now, it’s learning. Many people are worried that AI image generation will become so perfect that we won’t be able to tell real images from AI-generated ones. Which doesn’t sound too scary until you think about someone AI-generating a photo of a natural disaster.

Stealing from Artists ❌

AI is trained using images and videos from across the internet. It doesn’t just use things in the public domain, but will take pictures from photographers and artists. Most Chat GPT images (and any AI-generated images) are created using art taken from artists and photographers without their permission. In fact, a lot of artists and photographers don’t want AI to use their art at all.

Chat GPT images also “cuts out” the artists from creating art. Instead of looking for an artist and waiting for them to create something, people can now generate a picture in a few minutes. Maybe ten, if the art isn’t up to standard. Many artists are concerned that, if AI is perfected, they be out of a job or unable to make money from their art.

Mistakes Ratio ❌

AI is far from perfect. It’s supposed to be all-knowing, but it makes mistakes all the time. Forbes compiled this list of fifteen times AI made mistakes, and they aren’t exactly tiny. A recent study found that AI search engines have a 60% error rate. That doesn’t stop with text generation.

“What’s That?!” ❌

AI images are, more often than not, flawed. They look too smooth at best and, at worst, have way too many teeth or way too many fingers. There’s always some a little off with them, even with this new AI software.

AI Images and Clapper 🧠

We’ve already seen creators on platforms all across the internet adopting AI-generated images for their content. But what about Clapper?

Clapper creators thrive when they create original, authentic content. That doesn’t mean they can’t use an image generator – they just have to be selective! Clapper is more focused on genuine connections and building communities than on trending content. If you’re looking to be successful on Clapper, think of AI images as a fun trend or something you do occasionally.

Will Chat GPT Images Ruin Social Media? 🤔

The jury is still out on AI’s effects. It’s still in its infancy, and it still has a lot of issues to work out. But it’s learning fast: ChatGPT 4o generated over 700 million images in the week following its launch. We may see the fallout from this sooner rather than later.

But, at the very least, it will alter the ways we engage with social media. For some creators, it may help them visualize concepts or reignite their creative fire. Viewers will have to actually use their brains as they scroll the FYP. They’ll have to ask, “Is this real? Or is it AI?” They’ll have to research. Gone are the days of trusting everything on social media.

Then follows the most important question. Will we regain our discernment? Or will we let ourselves be tricked by AI?
